Are you vegan and tired of packing lunches to work, wishing you could just grab something from the canteen like everyone else? Well, if you worked for [**Ecotricity**](https://www.ecotricity.co.uk/?ref=veghousemagazine.com), you wouldn’t have that problem.

Ecotricity is a green energy company based in Stroud, Gloucestershire. A Which? Eco Provider for six years running and a long-standing advocate for ending our reliance on fossil fuels, the company is all about finding practical ways to make Britain greener.

So, naturally, that approach extends beyond the energy that powers our homes and businesses.

## **Making plant-based eating easy at work**

At the end of 2024, Ecotricity opened the UK’s first fully plant-based staff canteen, giving employees the chance to enjoy a hot, freshly prepared lunch without having to bring something from home or rely on a cold sandwich.

The meals are cooked at Forest Green Kitchen and transported just five miles down the road to Ecotricity’s office by electric vehicle, helping to keep the journey as low-impact as possible.

The menu ranges from comforting classics like lasagne and moussaka to Thai green curry and colourful poke bowls. It’s proof that plant-based food doesn’t have to mean compromising on flavour, variety or comfort.

The response from staff has been overwhelmingly positive, with comments ranging from “this is the best lunch ever” to “it’s so nice to have a warm home-cooked meal instead of a meal deal sandwich”.

## **Why what we eat matters for the planet**

Choosing what we eat can have a significant impact on the planet. Agriculture uses around 44% of the world’s habitable land and accounts for 70% of global freshwater withdrawals.

The difference between plant-based and animal foods can be huge. Livestock uses around 80% of agricultural land, including land for grazing and growing animal feed. Beef and lamb can require 50-100 times more land to produce the same amount of protein as plant-based alternatives such as peas and tofu.

The menu ranges from comforting classics like lasagne and moussaka to Thai green curry and colourful poke bowls.

Soy is sometimes criticised for its links to deforestation, but there’s an important part of the story that often gets missed. Around 77% of global soy is used to feed livestock, while just 7% is used directly for human foods such as tofu, soy milk and tempeh.

That’s why having a fully plant-based canteen is about more than catering for employees. It’s a practical way to make lower-impact food choices easier for everyone, while helping reduce the land, water and emissions associated with our food.

## **Walking the walk and talking the talk**

Sustainability is important to [**Ecotricity**](https://www.instagram.com/ecotricity/?ref=veghousemagazine.com), but it isn’t just something they talk about in terms of marketing. It’s built into the way the business operates.

Ecotricity’s four key pillars are energy, transport, food and nature, and these principles can be seen throughout the workplace.

The office itself is powered by renewable energy, while employees are encouraged to consider lower-carbon ways of getting to work, including car-sharing and public transport.

Food and drink are another big part of this. Rather than stocking dairy milk, the office fridges are filled with plant-based alternatives for teas and coffees. They also use carbon-neutral coffee, with the used coffee grounds collected for composting rather than going to waste.

## **Other ways Ecotricity is making their workplace greener**

Across the office, there are plenty of small changes that add up. They have dedicated recycling and food waste facilities, helping to keep as much as possible out of landfill.

They also provide organic and eco-friendly sanitary products, making more sustainable choices available as part of everyday office life.

Choosing what we eat can have a significant impact on the planet.

However, most importantly, sustainability is something employees are encouraged to take outside of the office too. Teams regularly get involved in litter picks and beach cleans, helping to protect the natural spaces around us.

From the energy powering their computers to the food on their plates, sustainability is part of everyday life at Ecotricity. Being a green company isn’t just about selling renewable energy. It’s about walking the walk and putting that commitment on the menu, too.
